Almex to win expander patent dispute [Agriworld, 17-12-2004]
Dutch extrusion specialist Almex has won a patent dispute with Amandus Kahl from Germany that ran for more than ten years (17-12-2004).
Amandus Kahl applied for a European patent on the process of using an expander as a preconditioner on top of a pellet press. This patent was awarded in 1989 under no. EP0331207.
This European patent restrained many expander manufacturers and feed millers in Europe to implement expander-pellet press combinations, although many delivered such combinations or have them in place.

One of these expander manufacturers, Almex from the Netherlands, did not give up the juridical fight and the German patent court has decided that the Kahl patent is not valid for Germany anymore. The verdict was passed on 20 April 2004.
Amandus Kahl did not appeal and the term for appeal has expired so the verdict is official. This means that anybody in German now can use an expander as a preconditioner before pelleting.
R obbert Veenendaal of Almex was very pleased with the decision. "It took us more than ten years and a lot of time and money, money that in my opinion would have been better used for research and development. We knew we were going to win, but we were not very happy with the high costs. Luckily the German judge was on our side."
Marketing manager Fritz Kahl was rather indifferent to the verdict. "We were the underdog in this case, so there is not much to say. We have taken all our brochures from the market in which the patent is mentioned. Within the company we do not have an active policy to object parties that violate the patent. That is also one of the reasons that we did not appeal to the verdict."

The AD conversion kit to replace the traditional cone system on Annular Gap expanders.
This conversion set consists of an ALMEX AD slide system modified such that it fits to the Annular Gap compression housing without any alterations needed. An additional hydro unit to control the slide goes with the set.Only the control system needs some small changes in order to create the AD slide functions. Several conversions have taken place already and with succes, these expanders run now more stable and with less fines!
The installation of the AD conversion set takes only one day (start early in the morning and finish late in the evening, running right from the start). For the conversion we supply a "control box" for the slide function to communicate with the existing control.
The picture shows a AD conversion kit, packed on a pallet, ready for shipment.
